New data from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing shows that Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) are improving access to care across the country, having served an estimated 3 million people in 40% of all U.S. counties last year.
Through their documented ability to improve access to lifesaving substance use treatment, crisis services, integrated care and other services for clients in urban and rural areas, CCBHCs are eliminating barriers to access for people in hundreds of communities. And the number of people those clinics serve continues to grow according to the new report, which is based on responses from more than 300 clinics.
|
- Today, CCBHCs serve an estimated 3 million people, representing continued yearly growth since the inception of the model.
- 79% of clinics report serving more people since becoming a CCBHC. Increases are particularly pronounced among CCBHCs whose states have adopted the model through Medicaid, with the number of people served by Medicaid-funded CCBHCs increasing 33%.
- The most commonly reported growth was among children and youth, uninsured people and those without a prior source of outpatient care.
- 87% of CCBHCs report offering one or more forms of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder, compared to only 64% of substance use treatment facilities nationwide.
- Medicaid CCBHCs and established grantees hired 11,292 new positions, a median of 15 new positions per clinic. Hiring was greatest among Medicaid CCBHCs, which reported a median of 22 new positions per clinic.

Raise Your Voice in Support of CCBHCs |
Despite their proven success, not enough people have access to the comprehensive, high-quality mental health and substance use care CCBHCs provide.
Here are two things you can do right now to help support and grow the CCBHC model:
|
- Urge your elected officials to pass the Ensuring Excellence in Mental Health Act (H.R.8543/S.2993). This bill would further establish CCBHCs in Medicaid and Medicare, helping cement their place as an enduring part of the health care landscape.
